There is a public footpath across the A36 at this point (part of the Macmillan Way), but the fencing, together with the difficulty of actually crossing such a busy stretch of fast, straight road (with 60 mph limit) mean that pedestrians cannot reasonably use this footpath between Rode and Beckington. There are no safe pedestrian crossings between Rode and Beckington, effectively cutting off the two villages for walkers. The photo below shows the difficulty of making this crossing - you need to firstly climb over a barrier, onto a dangerous verge next to the very busy road, then cross the road, and climb over the barrier on the opposite side. Only those with a reasonable amount of athleticism are able to do this!
