Town centre toilets survey
We know the Market Yard toilets matter to many people, and we want to be open about what’s happening and what comes next.
The toilets have reached the end of their life and had become expensive and unreliable to run, so they have been closed temporarily. In the meantime, Frome Town Council is funding public access to toilets at the Cheese and Grain, maintaining the Changing Places facility, and providing temporary toilets at major events like the Independent Market.
Now we're exploring options for the future - would you like us to refurbish, rebuild, rethink the site or take a different approach?
This is a big decision involving public money and an important town centre space, so we want to hear from you before anything is agreed. We will also need to seek permission from Somerset Council, who we have asked to provide us a long-term lease which will allow us to seek planning permission to refurbish or redesign the Market Yard toilets building.
Please share your views and help shape the future of town centre toilet provision in Frome. The survey has an opening section that takes around 5 minutes to complete, with an invitation to go into more depth if you would like to.
Market Yard toilets: Myth vs Fact
Phases
Deciding next steps
Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill in the survey to let us know your views on toilets in the town centre.
Over 500 people shared their thoughts by chatting to us in person and taking part online. There were a lot of different views but the bottom line is simple: you want central, reliable and accessible toilet facilities at Market Yard.
We've listened to your views and preferences, and our councillors will discuss next steps on Wednesday 22nd April. Anyone is welcome to come along to the council meeting at Frome Town Hall or online via Zoom. It will also be streamed on Youtube.
Read the reports and find out more about the upcoming meeting on the main project page.
We asked people to rank their preferences between four options. There was a tight margin between the top two results:
🥇 Creating a reimagined site incorporating new toilets
🥈 Refurbishing the existing Market Yard toilets
The popularity of the reimagining the site and the reasons people shared for liking the option match what we know: with a basic refurbishment, the problems we’ve encountered so far would mostly remain the same. We need a solution that works for the long-term.
⏩ These are the next steps proposed in the report:
➡️ Press Somerset Council to provide us a 25-year lease for the toilet block on fair terms. We can’t make any major improvements until this is agreed
➡️ Create a Frome Riverside Advisory Group to take forward the project to provide new toilet accommodation within the existing Market Yard toilet block, including the reimagination of the other parts of that block and adjoining apron
➡️ Develop a costed design for the development and invite tenders, to ensure good value for money
