Shaping Frome's cultural story

We know culture means different things to different people. As we shape Frome’s cultural story, following our expression of interest submission for Town of Culture 2028, we’d love to hear your perspective.

When you think about culture in Frome, what comes to mind?

What would you like to see from a Town of Culture programme?

There’s no right or wrong answer - it could be places, events, people, traditions, creativity, sport, heritage or something completely different.

Your responses will help shape how we describe and celebrate culture in Frome.

What is Town of Culture?

UK Town of Culture 2028 is a UK-wide competition. One large, one medium and one small town will be chosen as finalists. The winner will receive £3 million and the other two finalists will receive £250,000, with the money used to deliver an ambitious programme of cultural activity in 2028.

Frome Town Council has submitted an Expression of Interest. If Frome is shortlisted, we will receive £60,000 to develop and strengthen our full application. The answers you share will be an important part of our decision-making on what Frome's cultural programme will look like if we win.

Feargus Woods Dunlop1 week ago I wholeheartedly support the bid; excellent, ambitious thinking.I would suggest a really useful, practical addition to Frome's cultural scene would be to increase visibility of the disparate cultural hubs we have on offer. There is so much excellent live performance in and around Frome but it could be supported by better infrastructure. If there was a central (physical) location with information on all the events happening in Frome I believe it would increase audiences across the different venues/organisations rather than hurt them. The council already distributes posters to the various sites around town which is wonderful but slightly ad hoc. If there was a staffed central hub all the venues could include a poster drop there, perhaps special ticket offers too, and it would bring together the glorious work being down at Lucky Chance, the Merlin, the Memorial, the Cheese & Grain and all the others into one place and show what a vibrant and thriving scene Frome really is.

Evan Davis3 weeks ago We are proposing the creation of a community led cultural and youth development space in Frome, designed to provide a safe, inclusive environment where young people can access creative opportunities, develop practical skills, and engage with their community.Our work with local initiatives such as the Sunday Sound gatherings has highlighted both the enthusiasm of Frome’s youth and the clear need for a dedicated space to support them.While Frome has a strong creative identity, there are currently limited accessible venues that combine creative practice, vocational learning, and informal pastoral support. The loss of youth focused spaces has left a gap, particularly for those who may not engage with traditional educational settings. A multi use cultural hub would help address social isolation, support wellbeing, and create pathways into employment and entrepreneurship, while strengthening Frome’s community led ethos.Our vision is to repurpose a disused building into a flexible hub centred around an indoor skatepark, alongside areas for music production, performing arts, digital media, visual arts, fabrication, and enterprise. The space would host workshops led by local creatives, provide access to tools and training, and encourage youth led projects. By building on Frome’s existing creative networks, we aim to create a facility that reflects local needs.We intend to establish the project as a Community Interest Company, allowing us to access grant funding and reinvest all income into community benefit. After initial support with premises and setup, the space would move towards financial sustainability through a mixture of session fees, events, studio hire, workshops, and a small café. Subsidised access would remain a priority to ensure inclusion for disadvantaged young people in Frome.We believe this project aligns closely with Frome Town Council’s commitment to community wellbeing, youth engagement, and cultural development. With council support, we can create a sustainable, community driven space that nurtures local talent, strengthens social connections, and contributes to Frome’s long term culture and economy

Kit Sadgrove2 months ago I’d like to suggest we could wrap many aspects of Frome’s culture through drama. Not the usual happy-clappy work (admirable and fun though that is), but something that expresses how the people of Frome really feel, and how their forebears felt and lived. It would be collaborative and authentic, rather than imposed from above, and would involve people whose voices are rarely heard. There are examples of this kind of work in other places in the UK.One of Frome’s organisations has recently collected interviews from people in Trinity, and that could be a starting point for constructing a story or a thread.That said, it would be ambitious task, and therefore not lightly undertaken.Equally, it would tick a lot of boxes for Town of Culture.
