Cheese and Grain

Event Tec - new editing suites and rehearsal space at the Cheese and Grain

Since the opening of our town's world-class recording space, the Bert Jansch Studio, Frome has hosted international recording artists including Sir Tom Jones, and has delivered post production services for clients including Nick Cave and Laura Marling. It has also hosted youth music projects and masterclasses by local musicians.

Now we would like to take the next step in providing even more opportunities for musicians, performers and industry professionals. Adding this new space would provide local musicians with much needed facilities and attract top musicians from all over the world, making Frome a real hotspot for musical talent.

The plans have been designed to connect the building visually with the Cheese and Grain and provide an additional entrance for the venue.

Take a look at the plans by Swann Design Architects and share your feedback below.

The plan includes a new events entrance for the Cheese and Grain and improvements to make the car park more attractive. This would enhance the events experience for visitors and free up space in the bar/cafe area before doors open.

A closer look at how the new events entrance would allow the new building to feel connected to the Cheese and Grain, making the overall design feel like a natural and cohesive addition

The new building would use materials and design elements that allow it to feel like a natural extension to the distinctive Cheese and Grain building, with the new events entrance connecting the two.

Photo of the existing Bert Jansch Studio, which is well-used but due to the challenges of converting an existing building, is not accessible to all.

The new building would complement the facilities at the existing Bert Jansch Studio, which has a growing reputation as a world-class recording facility. Having a rehearsal space and better post-production editing capacity would give artists everything they need for the entire ideation, recording and production cycle.

Design of Event Tec space

1 January 2025 - 4 February 2026

During 2025, we engaged with key stakeholders on what a new space would need to include. Frome Town Council and the Cheese and Grain worked on the legal documentation needed to be able to acquire the additional land needed, which we hope to lease from Somerset Council on a peppercorn rent.

We heard from many people and the design by Swann Design Architects includes new rehearsal space, post-production editing suites, a new venue entrance for the Cheese and Grain, and improvements to make the car park area more attractive. The design aims to blend in with its surroundings and feel like a natural extension to our historic Cheese and Grain building.
